Caring for Golden Oldies: A Guide to Senior Dog Health
The Golden Years: Joys and Challenges
For those of us who have had the honour of sharing our lives with a dog in their twilight years, we know that this time is filled with both wonderful grey muzzled joys and more difficult challenges. How do we know what conditions to put down to "normal age-related changes" or what might be an indication of something that needs further veterinary treatment?
Introducing the Ageing Canine Toolkit
Thankfully, there's a new resource designed to help! The Ageing Canine Toolkit (ACT), developed by BSAVA PetSavers, is a wonderful tool for both dog owners and veterinary professionals. It includes:
A simple, color-coded checklist: This helps guardians identify potential health concerns and decide when to seek veterinary advice.
An informative leaflet: This provides valuable information about common health problems in senior dogs and what to look out for.
Why the ACT is Essential
Everyone here at PACT absolutely LOVE this resource. The ACT is the result of a major research project at the University of Liverpool, which revealed that many owners struggle to differentiate between normal ageing and signs of illness in their dogs. This toolkit aims to bridge that gap and empower owners to provide the best possible care for their senior companions. We think we need to shout about this and really help spread the word and advocate those grey muzzled wonders.

Here at PACT we had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Dr. Lisa Wallis & Professor Carri Westgarth all about the research and work that went into this and their journey. We touch on so many aspects of caring for our senior dogs and celebrate just how awesome they can be. Have a listen by clicking the button below or download from wherever you get your podcasts
Let’s all shout about it!
